The Honorable Minister, FCT has approved the establishment of a new Taxi Scheme for the FCT under the SURE-P programme. The scheme aims to improve transportation in the FCT. The Honorable Minister also approved an initial provision of 160 Taxis, through FCT SURE-P, for the take-off of the scheme and has mandated the Abuja Investments Company Limited (AICL) to handle the scheme on behalf of the Administration. The Taxis scheme will grow sustainably to meet the needs of the FCC.
The Abuja Taxi Scheme is an integral part of the FCT Transport policy which seeks to introduce an efficient and regulated transportation system in the city trough the promotion of city mass transportation (high density buses) on dedicated routes while phasing out the unregulated operation of unregistered and ill-maintained mini buses (Danfo) from the city centre. The new taxi scheme tagged the “FCT SURE-P/AICL” Abuja will introduce a new and improved means of transportation for residents and around the city while also enhancing the image of the FCT as Nigeria’s Federal Capital.
The launching of the Abuja Taxi Scheme therefore marks an important step in the transformation effort of the current FCT Administration and further demonstrates the Administration’s commitment to improved service delivery to the citizens. It is borne out of the strong desire to uplift the standard of living of the people, which is a key legacy objective of the current FCT Leadership. The administration in its usual style of inclusive governance has engaged with all stakeholders in the formulation and implementation of the new FCT Transport Policy/Programme.
